Blog 3: Discussion in English -- exploring cross-cultural issues

Blog 3 Part 1 (Due 1pm on Monday, 2/22): Post your blog entry in English!
Discussion topic: Japanese Valentine’s Day.

In class, we compared and discussed about Valentine’s Day in Japan and US. If you miss the class discussion, you can read and learn about the Japanese Valentine’s day at
http://web-japan.org/kidsweb/explore/calendar/february/valentine.html

Post your opinion on the following discussion questions in ENGLISH:
  • What do you think about Japanese Valentine’s Day (e.g., ギリチョコ、ほんめいチョコ、ともチョコ、White Day)?
  • Some people point out that the Japanese exchange gifts on so many occasions not because they wish to express gratitude or friendliness to others but simply because they are being unconsciously manipulated by the propaganda put out by those in the gift business, who actually create reasons for giving such gifts, such as major department store (e.g., Valentine’s Day and White Day). What do you think about this observation?
  • If you were in Japan as a US international student, how would you like to participate in the Japanese Valentine’s Day?

Blog 3 Part 2 (Due 1pm on Friday, 2/26): Post your comments in ENGLISH.
Let's have an open discussion!

Go to JAPN102 (http://uwrfnihongo102.blogspot.com/ ) and /or JAPN202 ( http://uwrfnihongo202.blogspot.com/) class blog, and respond to at least 2 people's blog discussion (ONE by a Japanese people and ONE by a US student).

This is a great opportunity for the JAPN 102 students to mingle with your せんぱい students in JAPN 202. 202 students are learning about the Japanese custom/perspectives of gift giving through the "giving-receiving" grammar structure in Lesson 14 (Genki 2).

You can also see how much they can write in Japanese (e.g., kanji, use of various complex grammar structures) after taking 3 semesters of Japanese classes.
